Gambrills is located in the central portion of the state of Maryland. Its land mass is a little over 7 and ½ miles. Gambrills is made up of two neighboring places located within Anne Arundel County in the Baltimore metro area. Gambrills is considered an unincorporated community as well as a census-designated place. What was originally known as Gambrills is now part of Odenton, another census-designated place. Gambrills derives its name from Augustine Gambrills, a local plantation owner. According to the 2010 United States Census, Gambrills is made up of 2,800 individuals.

Originally, the village of Gambrills is located along Maryland Route 175, which is two miles southeast of Odenton. The Gambrills incorporated community lies northeast of Maryland Route 175 and is separated from the village by Maryland Route 32, also known as the Patuxent Freeway.

Gambrills is served by Arundel Highschool, South River High School, located in Edgewater, Maryland, Arundel Middle School, located in Odenton, Maryland, and the School of Incarnation. Individuals that seek higher education opportunities attend the Anne Arundel Community College.
